World number 39 Aslan Karatsev won the Sydney Tennis Classic at the start of the season with a searing campaign of four-straight wins but he has an 11-25 record since then in what has been an ultimately concerning year. The 29-year-old made it 16-25 with a solid result over Tallon Griekspoor on Monday but it remains to be seen if he can ever rediscover his lightning best tennis on tour. World number 99 Mikael Ymer enjoyed his own excellent run at the Citi Open back in August, where he beat Karatsev in three sets before eventually finishing runner-up to Nick Kyrgios. A comfortable victory over Tim van Rijthoven on Tuesday and a strong qualifying campaign looks enough momentum to edge past this out-of-sorts version of Karatsev but the sensible option would be backing the Swede to take at least a set.
