THE PREDICTION

World number 38 Aslan Karatsev is a tough player to pin down right now as he enters the Canada Masters on a three-match losing streak and with a poor 14-19 record for 2022 so far. The 28-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 14th this season after winning his third ATP title at the Sydney Tennis Classic but barring recent back-to-back quarter-finals on clay in Bastad and Gstaad his results have been concerningly woeful. This is a seriously tough opening draw for the Russian with 25-year-old Maxime Cressy coming in to Toronto on a career-high ATP world ranking of 31st after recently winning his maiden title at the Atlanta Open. The serve-and-volley throwback has enjoyed a superb season so far, also finishing up twice this season at Melbourne 1 to Rafael Nadal and the Eastbourne International to Taylor Fritz, and he look set for further success on the hardcourt swing for the remainder of the season. Take the American to win outright here and consider adding at least a tiebreak, although much of that relies on a currently out-of-sorts Karatsev turning up.
