THE LOWDOWN

ASLAN KARATSEV

World number 32 Aslan Karatsev beat Ugo Humbert in straight sets on Saturday in an altogether more composed performance than we have seen for a few weeks. The 28-year-old started the season off like a train with a searing title-winning campaign at the Sydney Tennis Classic but he has struggled for consistency since losing in the third round of the Australian Open. Karatsev burst onto the scene in Melbourne last year when he became the first qualifier in over 40 years to reach the semi-finals.

HUBERT HURKACZ

Defending champion Huber Hurkacz overcame an early test from Arthur Rinderknech to eventually beat the Frenchman in straight sets. The world number 10’s title here last season came as a small shock but the Pole had shown plenty of promise and he has since blossomed, with victories over Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer taking him to the semi-finals of Wimbledon last summer. Hurkacz owns four ATP titles, his most recent coming at the Moselle Open late last year.

THE PREDICTION

This match could go any which way between two top players who have been occasionally found wanting for consistency on tour. Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz should be favoured to find a way through here, especially with Aslan Karatsev struggling in recent weeks, but this match looks a proper coupon buster in a number of ways. The pair share a head-to-head record unhelpfully poised at 1-1 with a win apiece last season: Karatsev in three at the San Diego Open and Hurkacz soon after in straight sets at Indian Wells. Having taken at least a set in their previous two meetings, back Hurkacz to so the same here and leave the winner up to chance.
