THE LOWDOWN
ASHLEIGH BARTY
World number one Ash Barty got her promising 2022 season going in the perfect way by winning the Adelaide international last week in four high-quality victories over top 20 players. The 25-year-old won Wimbledon last season for a second Grand Slam title after her success at Roland-Garros in 2019 and she will be targeting a first Australian Open title after making at least the last eight in her last three seasons.
LESIA TSURENKO
World number 120 Lesia Tsurenko did not drop a set as the sixth seed in qualifying to make the main draw at the Australian Open. The 32-year-old set a career-high of 23rd in the WTA world rankings back in 2019 and she won the most recent of her four WTA titles a year before at the Acapulco Open.
THE PREDICTION
After the season Ash Barty produced last year it is no surprise to hear murmurs of a potential calendar slam for the Aussie and she will want this first major most of all. After evoking her idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley by winning Wimbledon last season she faltered at the US Open to dangerous Shelby Rogers and that left the draw open for the once in a lifetime final the world watched in awe. Barty is already 4-0 this year in players ranked from 19 to 9th and she will be ready to go hard at this Australian Open with a straight-sets victory here.
