THE LOWDOWN

ASHLEIGH BARTY

World number one Ashleigh Barty has conceded just three games so far at the Australian Open after dismissing Lesia Tsurenko and Lucia Bronzetti. The 25-year-old is receiving all the love in Melbourne this season as a now two-time Grand Slam champion after her stunning campaign at Wimbledon last summer. Barty claimed the 14th WTA tour title of her career two weeks ago at Adelaide 1 and she won almost half of the tournaments she entered last season: winning five, losing in six and retiring injured from two.

CAMILA GIORGI

World number 33 Camila Giorgi is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open with two strong performances against Anastasia Potapova and Tereza Martincova. The 30-year-old found some searing form last summer to win a surprise first Masters title at the Canadian Open with one of three victories over Karolina Pliskova in the space of three months. Giorgi’s best Grand Slam showing came in a quarter-final exit to Serena Williams in 2018.

THE PREDICTION

Ash Barty was effusive in her praise for Camila Giorgi’s ball-striking in her post-match interview on Wednesday but she takes a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head record into this fourth meeting. Their last meeting came in the second round here three years ago, where Barty came back from a set down to beat the Italian but while this will be her first proper test she should be able to go one better four years later with a straight-sets win.
