ARTHUR FILS VS UGO HUMBERT PREDICTION
It is an all-French final in Tokyo as Arthur Fils and Ugo Humbert meet in what should be a fascinating encounter. It is the more experienced Humbert who has dominated the head-to-head with Fils; his compatriot six years his junior at the age of 20.
Two of those meetings came earlier this year and the other came in Cincinnati in 2023. Fils has won one solitary set in the seven they have played and Humbert really has dominated. The last time they met Humbert won 6-2 6-2 in Montreal just a few weeks ago and that will give him major confidence.
Fils has beaten some quality opposition this last week as he has gotten past Taylor Fritz, Matteo Berrettini (albeit due to the Italian retiring after winning the first set), Ben Shelton and then Holger Rune in the semi-finals. The win over Rune was particularly impressive as he overcame the tension of two tiebreaks to win both of them.
Fils showed earlier this year that he can rise to the challenge in finals and he notably beat Alexander Zverev on home turf in Hamburg to win his second ATP title. He will not be phased by the challenge presented by Humbert.
Humbert has been excellent this week but his level of opponent has not quite been to the same level as that faced by Fils. He is rightly the favourite coming into this one but it is arguably the previous meetings that have swung it in his favour. Based on performances this last week, Fils has been the better player.
This really is a match that could go either way but we have a feeling for Fils. The 20-year-old is a fighter and he is playing some quality tennis too. He will not be phased by the poor record against Humbert and we fancy him to edge this and win the title. From a better perspective, we fancy this going all the way and our pick is over 22.5 games.
