THE LOWDOWN
ARTHUR CAZAUX
21-year-old Arthur Cazaux will break inside the top 100 for the first time after a remarkable straight-sets victory over 28th seed Tallon Griekspoor backed-up his shock four-set result over eighth seed Holger Rune. The Frenchman is through to the round of 16 on his Australian Open debut riding form that saw him start 2024 with victory at the Noumea Challenger. Cazaux has hammered down 43 aces so far in Melbourne, possessing a serve that feels impossible for his relatively diminutive 6’0” frame.
HUBERT HURKACZ
World number nine Hubert Hurkacz came back from a set down to beat talented Ugo Humbert on Saturday, showing a rarely-spotted ruthless streak in key moments. The 26-year-old ended last season on fire, picking up a second Masters title in Shanghai and finishing runner-up to Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Swiss Indoors to come perilously close to qualifying for the ATP Finals. The Pole still played in Turin, deputising for an injured Stefanos Tsitsipas, where he took eventual champion Novak Djokovic all the way in a three-set epic.
THE PREDICTION
Two of the most potent serves left in the draw in Melbourne will set the tone for this first meeting between Hubert Hurkacz and Arthur Cazaux. 21-year-old Cazaux is one of many surprise round of 16 entrants at this madcap Grand Slam but he has improved exponentially with each passing round, edging past Laslo Djere in five sets before a four-set shock over Rune and a straight-sets dismissal of a tough foe in Tallon Griekspoor. The Frenchman should find Hurkacz to be his most powerful adversary yet, though, with the Pole serving 60 aces so far this week to his 43. Take at least a tiebreak in this clash of hammer arms as standard and then consider backing both players to win a set to leave the victor up to chance. Hurkacz should be coming through this eventually but he has some baggage at this stage of a Grand Slam, something that Cazaux is completely free of.
TIP: BOTH PLAYERS TO WIN A SET (AND OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS)
