THE LOWDOWN
ANNA KALINSKAYA
23-year-old Anna Kalinskaya will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 81st after coming back from a set down to beat Robin Montgomery in the first round of the Miami Open. The Russian reached the third round with an excellent win over Alize Cornet last time out and she took the first set against 26th seed Sorana Cirstea before defeat in the third round.
KAROLINA PLISKOVA
World number eight Karolina Pliskova was stunned by Danka Kovinic in her first match on court since the WTA Finals to crash out of Indian Wells. The 30-year-old is perhaps the best player to reach world number one this millennium without yet winning a Grand Slam but she is twice a runner-up, most recently to the retiring Ash Barty at Wimbledon last summer. Pliskova owns two Masters titles from Rome in 2019 and Cincinnati in 2016, with four finals at this level lost including the Miami Open in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
This is a significant chance for 23-year-old Anna Kalinskaya to claim the win of her young career. The current world number 84 took the first set from eventual champion Sloane Stephens at the Guadalajara Open last month before succumbing to an injury and her run to the third round at Indian Wells is a decent sign of progress. Karolina Pliskova took the first set before defeat to Kovinic last time out and that could be as much about match fitness than about her opponent. Therefore, the sensible, uninspiring pick is for Pliskova to win at least a set here and the reasonable, valuable move is for Kalinskaya to win at least one.
