THE PREDICTION

Former world number four Caroline Garcia got her promising US Open campaign underway with a straight-sets victory over Kamilla Rakhimova. The 28-year-old is rising a seven-match winning streak after claiming the third Masters title of her career, and 10th WTA title overall, at the Cincinnati Masters two weeks ago where she beat top 10s past and present in Petra Kvitova, Maria Sakkari, Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka. 23-year-old Anna Kalinskaya will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 52nd after beating Rebecca Peterson in the first round on Monday but this is a significant step-up in intensity. The Russian has enjoyed a solid year on tour so far but it is hard to see a confident Garcia, finally in form in tandem with a Grand Slam, to crash out here. Straight sets should do it but back Garcia to win outright inside an accumulator.
