THE PREDICTION

World number 33 Elise Mertens has struggled to impose herself on tour for most of the season, although she maintained her remarkable consistency at Grand Slam level with a run to the round of 16 that saw a huge win over Angelique Kerber. The 26-year-old owns six WTA titles, four on her favoured hardcourt surface, but her best runs have come on the bigger stages with a run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and two quarter-final exits at the US Open in 2019 and 2020. World number 53 Anhelina Kalinina enjoyed the best form of her career earlier this season on her favoured clay but she takes a four-match losing streak into the Cincinnati Masters. The 25-year-old qualified well this weekend, though, upsetting Petra Martic in the final round for a strong result coming into this second meeting with Mertens and this looks a really tough call between two players currently under par. Mertens won their only previous match in three sets at the Linz Open in 2020 and taking the usually super-consistent Belgian to win at least a set looks the suitable way to avoid a result here.
