THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating match between current British number one Cam Norrie, world number 11, and former British number one Andy Murray, ranked at world number 47 this week. 35-year-old Murray played a thrilling three-set match with old foe Stan Wawrinka on Monday to get his Cincinnati Masters campaign underway, crucially snapping a poor run if three-straight defeats since reaching the quarter-finals at the Hall of Fame Open last month. The former world number one has reached two finals on tour this season in his first full year back since potentially career-ending surgery, losing to Aslan Karatsev at the Sydney Tennis Classic and more recently to Matteo Berrettini at the Stuttgart Open.
26-year-old Norrie struggled through his opener too, eventually overcoming Holger Rune in three tight sets, but he has been in superb form over the summer. A run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon last month is his best achievement to date but his journey from late top 100 obscurity at the start of last season to a top 10 contender, Masters champion and an ATP Finalist is nothing short of remarkable. Murray needed three sets to beat Norrie at the China Open back in 2019 but this second meeting should come closer still. The longer this match goes on the better the younger Brit’s chances are and backing Norrie to win at least a set looks the sensible way to lean in this likely thriller.
