THE PREDICTION
World number 25 Tallon Griekspoor upset 11th seed Holger Rune in three sets on Sunday to back-up a solid enough opener over Taro Daniel. The 27-year-old is a very capable all-court threat who has improved significantly since the start of 2023, winning two ATP titles at the Pune Open on a hardcourt and on home grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and it took Alex de Minaur to oust him in three last time out at Monte-Carlo.
World number eight Andrey Rublev leads their head-to-head 2-0 but both previous meetings between the two saw sets go both ways last season in Doha and Halle. The 26-year-old has endured a tough spell of form on tour since his disqualification in the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships but a straight-sets victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Sunday, 12-10 in the opening tiebreak, depicts something of a recalibration in conditions that suit his game well. Each of Griekspoor’s last six matches have seen three sets and given his record with Rublev so far this clash looks likely to need a decider.
