THE LOWDOWN
ANDREY RUBLEV
Fifth seed Andrey Rublev has so far coasted through two straightforward fixtures with just 13 games conceded over two straight-set wins against Gianluca Mager and Ricardas Berankis. The 24-year-old contracted covid-19 at the start of the year to spoil his pre-season and warm-up schedule for the Australian Open but the draw has been kind to him so far and he should be ready in time for this tough test. The world number six has reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam four times including last season here where he lost to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev.
MARIN CILIC
World number 27 Marin Cilic dropped a set to Norbert Gombos on Thursday but he took the fourth-set tiebreak to advance relatively unscathed. The former world number three won the US Open in 2014 and he has twice been a runner-up to Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2017 and the Australian Open in 2018. Cilic won his 19th and 20th ATP tour titles last season at the Stuttgart Open on grass and the St. Petersburg Open, his first since 2018.
THE PREDICTION
Marin Cilic won the first meeting between these two seven years ago when the Russian was a teenager but even that came in three sets at the Geneva Open. Since then, Rublev has enjoyed great success over the Croat with four-straight wins to take their head-to-head record to 4-1 including two form last season at the Miami Open and Cincinnati Open. This could be quite a lengthy match between two heavy ball-strikers but Cilic’s form has vastly increased over the last few months and Rublev’s perhaps dwindled a little. The Russian remains the favourite to come through here but the sensible pick is an outright win and the reasonable risk is taking both players to win a set and leaving the victor up to chance. Their last meeting went to a decider at the Cincinnati Open in August.
