THE LOWDOWN
ANDREY RUBLEV
World number seven Andrey Rublev lost the first set to Jannik Sinner on Monday but it quickly became clear that the Italian had picked up an injury, causing him to retire from the third set at 1-1. 24-year-old Rublev has dropped sets in each of his four matches at Roland-Garros this campaign but he has emulated his best run here after losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals back in 2020. Rublev has won three ATP titles this season, adding to a career total of 11, including at the Serbia Open on clay – against world number one Novak Djokovic.
MARIN CILIC
World number 23 Marin Cilic put in one of his best performances in recent seasons to stun world number two Daniil Medvedev in three searing sets on Monday. The former world number three won the 2014 US Open in similar form and he has finished runner-up at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, on both occasions to Roger Federer. After a few seasons in the wilderness, Cilic’s form began to improve last summer with victory on his favoured grass at the Stuttgart Open before he won a 20th career ATP title at the St. Petersburg Open later last year.
THE PREDICTION
Monday was full of shocks at Roland-Garros but the biggest one was no doubt Marin Cilic absolutely dismissing Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on his least effective surface. The Croat has been talking confidently about his current level in recent weeks and he has backed that up on court, with this looking like a wonderful opportunity to reach the semi-finals in Paris for a first time. Cilic beat a teenage Rublev in their first meeting on clay way back in 2015 at the Geneva Open but the Russian paid him back in kind with four-straight victories between 2019 and 2021. However, Cilic bat Rublev in four sets in the third round of the Australian Open earlier this season and both players’ respective form in Paris suggests the 33-year-old is the favourite. Back Cilic to win outright or more cautiously to win at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable victors.
