THE LOWDOWN
ANDREY RUBLEV
World number six Andrey Rublev avoided a potential banana skin on Saturday with a straight-sets victory over Dan Evans, one of three top opponents in his tougher run than most top seeds. The 25-year-old is one win away from matching his best run to the quarter-finals here back in 2021 when he lost to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev. Rublev has not lost to the eventual champion of a Grand Slam since the 2020 US Open, again to Medvedev, to suggest he has some way to go before he can be considered a Grand Slam title contender.
HOLGER RUNE
World number 10 Holger Rune is yet to drop a set this week against some tough foes to look one of the outside dark horses for a surprisingly deep run in Melbourne. The 19-year-old stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets at this stage of Roland-Garros last summer to set his best run at a Grand Slam so far but his remarkable transformation on hardcourts late last season was the most impressive portion if his year – culminating in a three-set victory over Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters.
THE PREDICTION
Holger Rune beat Andrey Rublev in straight sets at the Paris Masters late last November in their only previous encounter and this should prove to be a thrilling rematch over five sets. Rublev’s relentless power is a tough thing to face for most players but he can often be caught out by those with a large range of technical weapons and Rune is a player evolving all the time to fit that category. Straight-sets two months ago and his spotless record so far suggests the Dane can reach the quarter-finals here but back him to win at least two sets inside an accumulator to leave the victor up to chance.
