THE LOWDOWN

ANDREY RUBLEV

World number 11 Andrey Rublev made the most of a flat performance from Cam Norrie to blast through their round of 16 clash in straight sets. The 24-year-old will be glad of the extra rest after a gruelling five-set slog against Denis Shapovalov in the third round, with Laslo Djere also pushing him to a decider in the first round. Rublev has now reached the quarter-finals at the US Open three times after doing so in 2017 and 2020, matching his best efforts at Roland-Garros and the Australian Open.

FRANCES TIAFOE

World number 26 Frances Tiafoe grabbed the biggest result of his career on Monday with a four-set victory over an out-of-sorts Rafael Nadal. The 24-year-old can break the top 20 for a first time on tour with one more win, which would also set his best Grand Slam showing after reaching a first Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open in 2019. Tiafoe stunned Andrey Rublev at the US Open last season to reach the round of 16 for a first time, beating the Russian in five sets.

THE PREDICTION

Frances Tiafoe reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon back in July before a gut-wrenching five-set defeat to David Goffin, suggesting an even deeper run was brewing. Not many people would have given the American a chance against Rafael Nadal in these conditions but he played a perfect match to make the most of the Spaniard’s shortcomings and quickly shut down brief flurries of brilliance. Tiafoe publicly voiced his desire to face Andrey Rublev at the US Open last season with full confidence that he would beat the Russian and he did so in five, although Rublev levelled their head-to-head record this spring with a straight-sets victory at Indian Wells. Rublev was excellent against Cam Norrie on Monday but he is in the poorer overall recent form of the two players in this quarter-final clash. That, plus the fact that Tiafoe will play his best showman in front of a partisan home crowd desperate to see him do well means backing the American to win outright looks a reasonable risk.
