THE PREDICTION

World number seven Andrey Rublev came back from a set down to compatriot Aslan Karatsev on Thursday, passing a very significant test in his aim to reach the quarter-finals here for the first time. The 25-year-old has reached multiple quarter-finals at the other three majors, including three at the US Open, and he has every chance at matching that this fortnight as one of the better all-courters on tour. 32-year-old David Goffin set a career-high ATP world ranking of seventh back in 2017 but the Belgian has struggled to rediscover those heights ever since the pandemic, despite brief flashes of his silky best. The current world number 123 lost to Cam Norrie in five sets in the quarter-finals here last summer to prove his credentials on this surface and sets should go both ways in a reasonable candidate for five here. Rublev leads their head-to-head 2-0 with wins at the US Open in 2017 and a four-setter at the Australian Open in 2020 but this first encounter on grass could come tighter still. Back Rublev to win outright after his statement win over Karatsev but it is probably wise to leave this one out of an accumulator.
