THE LOWDOWN
ABDREY RUBLEV
World number seven Andrey Rublev has battled through some very tough draws at Wimbledon so far, coming back from a set down to oust world number 14 Aslan Karatsev on Thursday before overcoming former number seven David Goffin in fur on Friday. The 25-year-old is one of the more consistent all-court threats on tour but he also struggles with a fairly obvious ceiling against player ranked higher than him, with seven quarter-final exits so far at Grand Slams for proof. Rublev is one win away from completing a set of quarter-finals at majors after emulating his best run here two years ago.
ALEXANDER BUBLIK
World number 26 Alexander Bublik endured a woeful start to 2023 but the Kazakh burst into form at the Halle Open two weeks ago, upsetting Borna Coric, Jannik Sinner, Jan-Lennard Struff, Alexander Zverev and then Andrey Rublev to claim his second and most prestigious ATP title to date. The 26-year-old made it eight wins on the spin on grass with an assured straight-sets result over Maximilian Marterer on Friday, serving 45 aces so far to reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time.
THE PREDICTION
This match looks a strong candidate for five sets on Sunday with the result incredibly hard to call. Bublik beat Rublev in three tight sets to win the Halle Open last month but Rublev leads their head-to-head 3-1 with three wins on hardcourts over the last four years and the longer format here at Wimbledon gives him time to weather some of Bublik’s occasional periods of unplayability. Sets have gone both ways in three of their four encounters on tour but Rublev is the only player to have earned at least one in each of them. That makes the sensible call backing Rublev to earn at least a set here but Bublik is playing so well right now that it is hard to confidently propose. Back Bublik to earn at least a set here and consider adding at least one tiebreak in the match, with one in each of Bublik’s three matches so far and Rublev seeing one in each of his last two.
