THE PREDICTION
There is an uncomfortable background to this first meeting on tour between world number 26 Anastasia Potapova and number 38 Marta Kostyuk, both of whom are currently at their career-high rankings after recent titles. Russia’s Potapova was criticised for coming to court wearing a Spartak Moscow top at Indian Wells a fortnight ago and Ukraine’s Kostyuk is likely to be very vocal of any potential aggravations sent her way here. 20-year-old Kostyuk has been perhaps the most vocal of the Ukrainian players on the WTA tour, not that that is a criticism of her compatriots, by refusing to shake hands with Russian and Belarussian players at the net. Kostyuk beat a Russian, Varvara Gracheva, to win her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open earlier this month and she will be very motivated to make that a streak as she fights for more than herself on tour.
The war in Ukraine is hard to look past as a factor in this match-up and it remains to be seen how 21-year-old Potapova will react to the crowd likely pulling totally for Kostyuk after her actions in Indian Wells. Potapova was impressive on-court in the desert, taking Jessica Pegula to three sets before defeat in the third round, but back Kostyuk to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance considering the vast amounts of pressure on both players.
