THE PREDICTION

World number 17 Jelena Ostapenko has dropped sets in each of her three matches at the Birmingham Classic so far but the Latvian has battled well to beat an up-and-comer in Linda Noskova, a former world number one in Venus Williams and then in-form Magdalena Frech. The 26-year-old won the Eastbourne International in 2021 to prove her credentials on grass and she came close to defending her title last summer before finishing runner-up to Petra Kvitova. 22-year-old Anastasia Potapova came to Birmingham at a career-high WTA world ranking of 21st and that extra edge has seen her through three three-set battles of her own. The Russian has come back from a set down in three successive matches against Marta Kostyuk, Caty McNally and Harriet Dart to make the semi-finals and that makes taking Ostapenko to earn the first set here a tempting option.

A first meeting between the two should be a proper spectacle on Saturday and whilst Ostapenko is the favourite, Potapova has upset plenty of players this season. Consider taking the match to three sets but otherwise back Ostapenko to earn at least one of them.
