World number 174 Katie Swan conceded just three games to Arianne Hartono on Tuesday for an impressive start to her Chennai Open campaign. The 23-year-old’s last tour-level victory came against former world number four Sloane Stephens at the Bad Homburg Open back in June but she more recently won an ITF event last month, beating fellow Brit Jodie Burrage in the final. This looks a tough round of 16 clash with world number 147 Anastasia Gasanova, though, after the Russian stunned top seed Alison Riske-Amritraj in straight sets on Tuesday. The Russian, also 23, has not won a tour-level match since January when she also stunned a top player in Elina Svitolina at Adelaide 1 but she lost her next match after that to suggest this is no gimme off the back of beating Riske-Amritraj. Swan has the better, more consistent form of the two and backing her to win at least a set looks the sensible way to avoid a result.
