THE PREDICTION

This was supposed to be a major breakthrough season for 19-year-old Clara Tauson after she claimed two WTA titles last season to shine alongside her contemporaries, Leylah Fernandez and Emma Raducanu, but injuries have hampered large parts of her year so far. The Dane overpowered Harmony Tan on Monday to grab a first tour-level win since Indian Wells in March, where she beat now top 20 Beatriz Haddad-Maia and took Iga Swiatek to three sets before defeat, for a huge confidence boost that suggests she could be coming into form just in time for New York. This first meeting with a powerful rising star is exactly the kind of match that 32-year-old Alize Cornet can either blitz or tank and trying to predict which way the Frenchwoman will go has often proved impossible. The world number 37 has beaten the likes of Swiatek, Simona Halep and Jelena Ostapenko in what has been one of her best years on tour overall but there is more than a scent of an upset about this first meeting with Tauson that makes leaving the match alone a wise decision. A one-off on Tauson to earn at least a set seems about as reasonable as backing Cornet to take this in two. Perhaps on this occasion taking the match to see two sets could be the shrewd move.
