THE PREDICTION

This should be a thrilling all-French clash on Monday between two in-form players as world number 34 Caroline Garcia takes on number 40 Alize Cornet. 28-year-old Garcia is coming with a five-match winning streak from claiming the Poland Open title late last month, her ninth WTA title overall after also winning the Bad Homburg Open in June where she beat Cornet in a tight three-set battle. 32-year-old Cornet owns six WTA titles herself but she has set new benchmarks for her success this season by finally breaking her Grand Slam quarter-final duck, reaching the last eight in Melbourne before defeat to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins. Cornet also recently became one of just five players to beat world number one Iga Swiatek this season with a huge performance at Wimbledon, where both she and Garcia made the last 16. Garcia leads their head-to-head record 4-2 but each of their last three meetings have gone to three sets and that could be a suitable, albeit risky, option here. Otherwise back Garcia to win at least a set as the just-about likelier to come through.
