THE LOWDOWN
ALISON VAN UYTVANCK
27-year-old Alison Van Uytvanck won in comfortable straight sets over Cristina Bucsa on Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for only the second time. The Belgian reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros back in 2015 but she has since managed just one second week at a major with a round of 16 exit at Wimbledon in 2018.
QIANG WANG
Current world number 110 Qiang Wang is a former world number 12 from 2019 and she played like it in a straight-sets upset against an out-of-sorts Coco Gauff on Monday. The 30-year-old lost to Gauff in the final of the Emilia-Romagna Open last season in her first WTA tour final since an incredible run of six tournaments at the end of 2018 in which she reached six semi-finals in a row on the Asian swing and two of three finals. The Chinese star made the round of 16 here back in 2020 but her best Grand Slam result was a quarter-final exit at the US Open in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Qiang Wang was the winner of her only tour-level meeting with Alison Van Uytvanck at the US Open in 2019 and she must fancy her chances now after one of the best wins of her recent career. However, the Belgian is one of the grittier fighters on tour and well capable of forcing a decider here let alone reaching the third round. Before Wang’s win over Gauff Van Uytvanck would have likely been the favourite to come through this tough match-up and so taking the world number 55 to win at least a set looks the shrewd move here even if she ends up losing. However, the sensible call on form is probably Qiang Wang to win outright. A head-scratcher, this one.
