THE LOWDOWN
ALISON RISKE
World number 46 Alison Riske dismissed an out-of-sorts Donna Vekic in straight sets on Monday. The 31-year-old successfully returned to the tour last season after a long injury lay-off and won her third career WTA title with a great campaign at the Linz Open late in the year. Riske reached the round of 16 here back in 2020 but her best Grand Slam showing was a quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2019.
JELENA OSTAPENKO
24-year-old Jelena Ostapenko conceded the opening set tiebreak in her first round match with Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova before rallying well to take the match in three. The Latvian won Roland-Garros in 2017 just a few days after her 20th birthday and after a few seasons struggling with that success she looked to be on her way back last year with a fourth career title won at the Eastbourne International.
THE PREDICTION
This should be an exciting battle between Jelena Ostapenko and Alison Riske with plenty of long, brutal rallies likely. The Latvian was the winner of their only previous meeting in a straight-sets result at the 2019 US Open and while she can be backed to eventually overpower Riske the American is well capable of forcing a decider. Take the 26th seed Ostapenko to stutter and slam her way into the third round with an outright win.
