THE PREDICTION

31-year-old Magda Linette is the 24th seed in New York after her remarkable run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January. However, the Pole has since struggled to find that same rhythm on tour, perhaps struggling with the new target on her back, and she brings a three-match losing streak into the first round to face a player who has taken the lion’s share of their meetings over the years. World number 68 Aliaksandra Sasnovich is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but she leads Linette 2-1 at tour-level and 6-1 overall in a surprisingly one-sided head-to-head. The 29-year-old made the round of 16 in Cleveland this week before defeat to eventual finalist Ekaterina Alexandrova but she has endured a tough past 12 months on tour with very few spells of respite. This is a tricky match to call between two players lacking in confidence and form but back Sasnovich to earn at least a set given her record over the Pole.
