THE LOWDOWN
ALIAKSANDRA SASNOVICH
World number 60 Aliaksandra Sasnovich overcame a strong test against Irina-Camelia Begu to reach the round of 16 at the Miami Open. The 28-year-old made it to this stage of Indian Wells last October via a shock win over Simona Halep and her form has been steadily growing since. Sasnovich finished runner-up to Amanda Anisimova at Melbourne 2 back in January.
BELINDA BENCIC
World number 28 Belinda Bencic beat Heather Watson in straight sets on Saturday to reach the round of 16 without dropping one. The Swiss won two Gold Medals in singles and Women’s Doubles at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer but without ranking points attached to the achievement she has slowly drifted away from a career-high of fourth. Bencic won the Canadian Masters on her debut as a teenager way back in 2015.
THE PREDICTION
There are some encouraging signs in Belinda Bencic’s results this campaign that the Swiss might be regaining some of her previously level after an odd 2021 season in which she excelled off the tour but struggled on it. The 25-year-old looks to be the favourite to come through this contest on prestige but Aliaksandra Sasnovich is in some serious form this season and the Belarussian won their only previous meeting in three sets at the US Open back in 2018. Backing Sasnovich to win at least a set once again to leave the winner up to chance looks the shrewd move here.
