ALEXEI POPYRIN VS MATTEO BERRETTINI PREDICTION

Alexei Popyrin took a couple of weeks off after his run to the round of 16 at the US Open but the 25-year-old Australian has struggled for any form since coming back. He played in the Japan Open, Shanghai and then Vienna last week and he has only managed a solitary win in Shanghai against Miomir Kecmanovic.

He faces a difficult opening match in Paris which will not help his cause as he tries to fight some form. He meets Matteo Berrettini who he has played twice and lost to on both occasions albeit back in 2019 and 2021.

Berrettini has had some good results in recent months and played in Vienna last week. He played well against Marton Fucsovics and then Frances Tiafoe but lost to the in-form Karen Khachanov. While the Russian is clearly playing well, Berrettini was abysmal in that game and that is symptomatic of how recent tournaments have gone for him.

Ultimately, there is more to like about Berrettini coming into this match than Popyrin although the Australian is always capable of putting in a good performance. Berrettini has the form, the momentum and previous meetings all in his favour and he is our pick here.
