THE PREDICTION

This should be a fierce battle on Thursday between world number 45 Alexei Popyrin and number 48 Matteo Arnaldi, with both impressing in recent months. 24-year-old Popyrin is a player who blows hot and cold on tour more than most with his talents but he produced an excellent campaign to win the Umag Open in July, where he came back from a set down to beat rising star Arnaldi in the semi-finals. 22-year-old Arnaldi set a career-high ATP world ranking of 47th after a remarkable run to the round of 16 at the US Open last month, with a straight-sets victory over an out of sorts Cam Norrie particularly eye-catching. The Italian put in a huge shift when called upon at the Davis Cup groups stages and he looked strong again in Beijing, beating J.J. Wolf handily before a tight three set defeat to Nicolas Jarry. Popyrin takes a three-match losing streak into this rematch but he has been competitive throughout. Back the Aussie to earn at least a set, as the more effective on hardcourts on the limited evidence we have, to leave the victor up to chance.
