THE PREDICTION
This could be a thrilling first encounter between world number 121 Hamad Medjedovic, who qualified handily this week to make his debut in Rome, and number 42 Alexei Popyrin. 20-year-old Medjedovic shocked the field ton win the Next Gen ATP Finals late last season, having impressed on his recent Davis Cup debut, and he looked strong on clay in Madrid last time out before a straight-sets exit to an inspired Jiri Lehecka. 24-year-old Popyrin is no slouch on clay despite his build and powerful game for faster surfaces, with last summer’s comeback over Stan Wawrinka to win the Umag Open hugely impressive. The Aussie stunned defending Monte-Carlo champion Andrey Rublev en-route to the last 16 there last month but he has lost each of his last three to make this a very tough call on current form. Back Medjedovic to earn at least a set on momentum but keep this one from an accumulator.
