THE PREDICTION

World number five Alexander Zverev looks the reasonably solid title favourite here at the Italian Open, where he won his first of his five Masters titles back in 2017, after a so far spotless run. The 27-year-old saw the last of his natural predators crash out on Tuesday as defending champion Daniil Medvedev lost to Tommy Paul, leaving Zverev the highest remaining seed in a decimated draw.

World number 13 Taylor Fritz will similarly feel that he has an excellent chance at winning his second Masters title if he can pass this test. The 26-year-old overcame eighth seed Grigor Dimitrov in three sets to back-up an excellent campaign so far and he is an excellent all-court threat when his confidence is high.

Zverev leads their head-to-head 4-3 to look the favourite, particularly as this will be their first meeting on clay, but Fritz won their most recent encounter at the United Cup early last season and he beat the German in their only previous clash at Masters level back in 2021 at Indian Wells. Back former champion Zverev to edge this outright in conditions that suit him a little better than the American.

TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN
