THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating 15th edition of a storied head-to-head between world number five Alexander Zverev and number 12 Stefanos Tsitsipas, with the Greek currently leading things 9-5. 25-year-old Tsitsipas has endured two seasons of relative decline from his previous heights, winning back-to-back Masters titles back-to-back here in 2021 and 2022, but he conceded just one game to clay-courter Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Wednesday to make a real statement of intent on his most successful court. 26-year-old Zverev looked solid in his opener over Sebastian Ofner on Tuesday, receiving a bye to the second round as the fifth seed this week, and he will be desperate to pull one back in his record against Tsitsipas as he gears up for a very important clay swing as the defending Olympic champion.
Zverev beat Tsitsipas in their most recent contest, in straight sets at the United Cup in January, but the Greek leads 4-1 on clay including en-route to his second title here two years ago. Back Tsitsipas to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier to thrive in these conditions to leave a wholly unknowable result up to chance. Zverev conceded a set to the Greek in his only clay-court victory in Madrid two years ago.
TIP: STEFANOS TSITSIPAS TO WIN A SET
