THE LOWDOWN

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

World number three Alexander Zverev looked assured in a straight sets victory over John Millman on Rod Laver Arena to reach the third round without dropping a set. The 24-year-old won the 19th ATP tour title of his career late last season at the year-end ATP Finals, beating Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev en-route. Zverev has reached the semi-finals of every Grand Slam but Wimbledon and he finished runner-up to Dominic Thiem at the US Open in 2020.

RADU ALBOT

Former world number 39 Radu Albot played the player and not the occasion on Wednesday with a really impressive straight-sets win over Aussie wildcard Aleksandar Vukic. The 32-year-old is better than his current world ranking of 124th and he looks capable of re-joining the ATP tour proper in this kind of form after a tough 2021. The Moldovan has never made it past the third round stage of any Grand Slam.

THE PREDICTION

Radu Albot is a dogged competitor with a 100% positive work ethic and that kind of player used to give Alexander Zverev plenty of trouble, especially at Grand Slams. Their only previous meeting fell the German’s way in five sets in the first round of the US Open back in 2019 but we have since stopped worrying about the German’s sticking power after two exceptional seasons on tour. Albot, too, is not getting any younger and much like John Millman he should find himself competing well but ultimately out-classed. Zverev can win this in straight sets.
