THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Alexander Zverev and former number six Matteo Berrettini face off in a fascinating third round clash on Saturday with both players currently ranked outside the top 20. World number 21 Zverev is working on repairing his ranking after suffering a serious foot injury at Roland-Garros last summer and he did enormously well to emulate his run to the semi-finals there last month before defeat to runner-up Casper Ruud. The German needed four sets to navigate past plucky qualifier Yosuke Watanuki on Thursday but he can at least take positives that he is currently managing to win ugly at SW19 after two staccato performances so far. World number 38 Berrettini is a burgeoning story at Wimbledon, though, after an incredible straight-sets victory over in-form Alex de Minaur. The Italian finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic here two years ago and he was the form player on grass last summer to look a contender once again before cruelly contracting covid-19 on the eve of the tournament.

The pair’s past 12 months have been largely about injury, Zverev’s one big absence and Berrettini’s a frustrating series of hinderances, to set up an interesting narrative in this likely thriller. 26-year-old Zverev leads 4-1 in their head-to-head record and he has the edge on fitness right now but Berrettini is by far the better player on grass. The match is on the Italian’s racket but it is his legs, and troublesome core, that concerns. Back Berrettini to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors and add at least a tiebreak between two huge servers.
