THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Luciano Darderi will break inside the top 50 for the first time after rising to the occasion on Friday, comfortably beating fellow up-and-comer Mariano Navone in straight sets to keep Italian hopes alive in Rome. The absence of Jannik Sinner, Matteo Berrettini, and now Lorenzo(s) Musetti and Sonego, threatened to pour water on the host nation’s party here but Darderi has provided plenty of entertainment already and he should not be underestimated against 2017 champion Alexander Zverev, who has struggled to find his best on clay so far this swing.
World number five Zverev conceded just four games against Aleksandar Vukic on Friday but recent defeats to Cristian Garin and Francisco Cerundolo in Munich and Madrid, respectively, should be below the German’s lofty standards in these conditions. Darderi won his maiden ATP title in only his third tour-level event at the Cordoba Open in February and a three-set victory over Denis Shapovalov in the first round gives him some target practice against a big server here. Leave this match out of an accumulator but otherwise consider taking Darderi to snatch at least a set backed by raucous partisan support.
