THE PREDICTION

World number six Jannik Sinner overcame a spirited Stan Wawrinka in four sets on Saturday to reach the round of 16 at the US Open with little real fuss. The 22-year-old is just one match away from the rematch we all want to see against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, with the pair producing the bets match of 2022 here last season in a five-set classic. Sinner recently claimed a first Masters title in Toronto to pass another milestone on tour but this will be a significant challenge against 2020 runner-up Alexander Zverev, who came back from a set down to overcome an initially excellent Grigor Dimitrov. 26-year-old Zverev reached the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters three weeks ago via a huge upset over Daniil Medvedev and it took eventual champion Novak Djokovic to oust him in two tight sets. The German is in his element in these conditions and he will improve with each passing round in New York.

Zverev leads Sinner 3-1 in their head-to-head record after winning each of the last three meetings between the two, including a round of 16 clash here two years ago in straight sets. Sinner has improved a lot since their last match in Monte-Carlo last season but Zverev’s pedigree at this level, particularly here in New York, makes this look a potential thriller that just edges the German’s way. Take Zverev to earn at least a set and for at least a tiebreak in the match – with Zverev earning at least one in all four of their previous meetings and with at least a tiebreak in each of their last three.
