ALEXANDER ZVEREV – Three-time semi-finalist at Roland-Garros
World number four Alexander Zverev survived a huge scare by 26th seed Tallon Griekspoor on Saturday, coming back from a set down and then 2-2 to edge the Dutchman 10-3 in an eventually impressive tiebreak. The 27-year-old should be feeling some fatigue in his legs after that four-hour plus scrap and that will only compound the pressure added by the increased speculation whilst his domestic abuse trail is underway in Berlin.
Zverev might have ended Rafael Nadal’s glorious residency here at Roland-Garros with a superb first round victory and he brings a nine-match winning streak on clay into the round of 16.
HOLGER RUNE – Has reached quarter-finals here in each of past two seasons
Former number four Holger Rune survived his own five-set test by Flavio Cobolli in the second round, also winning a deciding tiebreak 10-7 to edged through, but he looked more assured in straight sets over qualifier Jozef Kovalik.
The 21-year-old has been struggling to find anything like the form that saw him end 2022 with an upset over Novak Djokovic to claim the Paris Masters, and reach back-to-back quarter-finals here at Roland-Garros, but there are encouraging signs of a resurgence.

Holger Rune beat Alexander Zverev in comfortable straight sets, on clay, in their only previous encounter en-route to his 2022 Munich Open title. The Dane, however, is currently some way off of the pace that saw his star rise rapidly that season whilst Zverev is arguably enjoying the form of his career, with a nine-match winning streak on clay including his superb title-winning campaign at the Italian Open three weeks ago.
Recovery will be key to this second clash between the two but Rune’s body has let him down far more than most elite players at this level in recent years. Zverev has drifted back to fourth in the odds for title favourite as his peers improve but he can be backed to out-last an initial assault by Rune to reach the quarter-finals.
