ALEXANDER ZVEREV Aiming for a fourth semi-final in a row at Roland-Garros

World number four Alexander Zverev weathered a few storms from former number four Holger Rune in five sets late on Monday night, a great result in these conditions. The 27-year-old might have ended Rafael Nadal’s glorious dominance at Roland-Garros with a superb first round performance but he has been caught cold a few times in recent rounds, with 26th seed Tallon Griekspoor losing the fifth set on his racket in the third.

Zverev has reached the semi-finals in each of his last three appearances here, with his two defeats at this stage coming against Dominic Thiem in 2018 and Novak Djokovic a year later.

ALEX DE MINAUR First Australian man to reach the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros since 2004 (Lleyton Hewitt)

World number 11 Alex de Minaur is through to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros for the first time, matching his best efforts at a Grand Slam after making the last eight at the US Open in 2020. The 25-year-old has improved significantly over the past two seasons to become a consistent top 10 challenger but he has struggled, apparently until clicking into gear against Daniil Medvedev on Monday, to find his beat level on clay.

De Minaur trails Alexander Zverev 2-7 in their convincing head-to-head, with both wins over the German coming on home soil whilst representing Australia at the 2020 ATP Cup and this January’s United Cup.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV VS ALEX DE MINAUR PREDICTION

Alexander Zverev has edged through two five-set slogs to spend longer on court than any other quarter-finalist here and that could end up costing him, with Alex de Minaur nearly a whole four hours fresher than his opponent. The Aussie exclaimed a sudden love for the conditions at the end of his eye-catching win over Daniil Medvedev but Zverev has reached each of the last three semi-finals to prove his staying power on this court and his lead in their head-to-head is very convincing.

De Minaur tends to struggle against the flatter, more powerful hitters on tour such as Stefanos Tsitsipas but he has earned sets in four of their last five to suggest this could go to four or even five. Back Zverev to find a way through.
