ALEXANDER SHEVCHENKO VS ASLAN KARATSEV PREDICTION
Former world number 14 Aslan Karatsev is perhaps the most mysterious player on the ATP tour, capable of beating a peak Novak Djokovic on clay at the Belgrade Open in 2021 at his best, but he has struggled to find any sort of consistency on tour since the start of 2022.
The 30-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Open last spring to further prove his credentials on this surface but world number 59 Alexander Shevchenko enjoyed his tour breakthrough there too, winning the Challenger tour in the Spanish capital before a third round exit in three sets to Daniil Medvedev.
23-year-old Shevchenko upset Fabian Marozsan in the first round of the Geneva Open last week before a loss to Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals, whom Karatsev lost to in the first round.
A first meeting between the two looks like Shevchenko’s to lose on recent form but Karatsev’s ceiling is far higher – particularly at this level. Expect the Russian to find a way through but the sensible alternative is backing Shevchenko to earn at least a set.
