THE PREDICTION

World number 65 Lorenzo Sonego has endured a torrid season of poor overall form but it is no surprise to see the Italian in the Moselle Open final on previous years’ merits as he tends to enjoy the conditions on an indoor hardcourt. The 27-year-old famously stunned Novak Djokovic at the Vienna Open almost two years ago and he exacted a similarly shock victory over the defending champion Hubert Hurkacz on Saturday for what is probably his bets result of 2022. World number 44 Alexander Bublik is also at his best in these conditions, winning his maiden ATP title on an indoor hardcourt, and on French soil as it happens, at the Montpellier Open back in February. The 25-year-old played just three games against Stan Wawrinka on Saturday before the Swiss was forced to retire but he dropped sets in each of his three previous matches in Metz, whilst Sonego is yet to drop one all week.

The Italian also leads Bublik 3-0 in their head-to-head, including a win in these conditions at the Paris Masters two years ago, whilst Bublik has lost five of his six tour finals. All this points to backing Sonego to win at least a set as the sensible move, and an outright win the risky one.
