THE PREDICTION
World number 41 Lesia Tsurenko has struggled to find her best level for much of this season but three defeats from her last five, and a sorry early exit in Charleston earlier this month, suggest she may be on the way back down from some renaissance form. The 34-year-old has been a tough factor for many players across all surfaces over the last three or so year, perhaps most effectively on grass and clay after reaching back-to-back last 16s at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon last summer, but there is certainly a chance at an upset here against teenager Alex Eala. 18-year-old Eala will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 161st after receiving a wildcard to the main draw in Madrid but she will be hoping to make more of a splash this time around after a heavy exit to Tatjana Maria this time last season. The Filipina has grabbed a few eye-catching results on the ITF circuit over the last few months but even a lacklustre Tsurenko should have too much in these conditions to fall at the first hurdle. Back the Ukrainian to win outright.
TIP: LESIA TSURENKO TO WIN
