THE LOWDOWN
ALEX DE MINAUR
World number 24 Alex de Minaur is the last Aussie standing in Melbourne and he will leave nothing behind on Rod Laver Arena in this first tour-level meeting with Novak Djokovic. The 23-year-old beat Benjamin Bonzi in straight sets on Saturday, impressively taking the opening tiebreak 7-0 before two more one-sided sets. De Minaur reached the quarter-finals of the US Open back in 2020 before defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic but he is targeting a first quarter-final here in Melbourne.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC
World number five Novak Djokovic had his hamstring treated several times on Rod Laver on Saturday but he still managed to beat Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, coming back from three breaks in that span. The 35-year-old is defending his Australian Open titles from 2019, 2020 and 2021 given that he was banned from playing here in Melbourne last season and he is the record title-holder here with nine overall. Djokovic claimed the 21st Grand Slam of his career at Wimbledon last summer and he is chasing Rafael Nadal’s Men’s record of 22.
THE PREDICTION
Novak Djokovic is clearly being hampered by a hamstring injury but the Serb’s elasticated body is more capable than any other’s on tour of coping with it. The world number five made it 37 wins on the spin in Australia and a 24th in a row at the Australian Open with a vastly impressive victory over Grigor Dimitrov. The 35-year-old looked close to retiring from the tournament in his second round four-set victory over Enzo Couacaud and several on-court treatments on Saturday suggest he is at least managing an ongoing issue. De Minaur could be in for the win of his career here of he learns from Dimitrov’s mistakes here but going against the nine-time Australian Open champion looks unwise after surviving a proper test on Saturday. Back Djokovic to win outright or consider taking De Minaur to earn at least two sets on its own.
