ALEX DE MINAUR – First round of 16 at Roland-Garros
World number 11 Alex de Minaur spent much of his formative years on the clay of Barcelona but the Aussie has occasionally struggled to find his absolute best in these conditions. A vastly impressive comeback from a set down to beat Jan-Lennard Struff sees him through to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros for the first time, becoming the first Australian man to do so in 17 years, but he will have to improve significantly to progress further.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV – Four-time Grand Slam finalist, winning the US Open in 2021
World number five Daniil Medvedev looked assured in an excellent four-set victory of up-and-coming Tomas Machac, dropping his second set of the tournament but looking in good shape overall. Clay is certainly the Russian’s least effective, and least favourite, surface but victory at the Rome Masters last spring was a surprise that has changed the narrative a little since. 28-year-old Medvedev reached the quarter-finals here in 2021, two months before winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open.
ALEX DE MINAUR VS DANIIL MEDVEDEV PREDICTION
Daniil Medvedev leads Alex de Minaur 6-2 in their fairly convincing head-to-head, including 2-1 since the Aussie’s evolution into a top 10 contender from the start of 2023. The pair have never met on clay, on which De Minaur is certainly the more comfortable, and four of their eight encounters have seen sets go both ways, including at the US Open last summer, to suggest this could see four or even five. Back Medvedev outright to reach the quarter-finals.
