THE LOWDOWN

ALEX DE MINAUR

World number 22 Alex de Minaur beat a tough foe in Tommy Paul in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the round of 16 unscathed. The 23-year-old won two ATP titles last season at the Antalya Open and Eastbourne International on hard and grass, respectively, but he is an excellent clay-courter too having spent much of his young life training in Spain. De Minaur owns five ATP titles overall but he has yet to reach the quarter-finals at Masters level.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

World number three Alexander Zverev overcame a new tough competitor on clay in 21-year-old Sebastian Baez, beating the in-form Argentine in tight straight sets. The 25-year-old finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Madrid Open on Sunday to come so close to defending his title from a career-best 2021 season that also included a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games and a second ATP Finals crown.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a really entertaining clash of styles between big-serving Alexander Zverev and pacy Alex de Minaur, especially if the latter is up for the challenge. Zverev leads their head-to-head record 5-1 after most recently beating De Minaur at last season’s Vienna Open on his way to the title there but the Aussie won their previous meeting at the ATP Cup in 2020. Their two most recent meetings have needed a deciding set to settle them and that makes taking Zverev to win outright the sensible move.
