THE LOWDOWN

ALEKSANDAR VUKIC

25-year-old wildcard Aleksandar Vukic will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 144th on Monday as he takes to court for only his second main draw Australian Open match. The Aussie lost to Karen Khachanov in four sets last season and he will be well-backed to attempt another upset here after his run to the quarter-finals of Adelaide 2.

LLOYD HARRIS

World number 32 Lloyd Harris enjoyed his best season on tour so far in 2021 with a first ATP 500 final reached at the Dubai Open, a quarter-final exit at the US Open and a career-best victory over Rafael Nadal at the Washington Open. The 24-year-old has the potential for even more growth, especially on hardcourts, and he will be an intriguing player to follow in Melbourne as he aims to best his third round exit last season.

THE PREDICTION

There is the scent of an upset about this match for a few reasons, even though Lloyd Harris is one to watch for a run to week two in Melbourne. The big South African lost his only match of 2022 so far to Soonwoo Kwon in Adelaide last Tuesday to make it three matches now without a win. He faces an Aussie underdog who will get the vast majority of the support on Court 3, with Vukic surpassing him in Adelaide with a run to the quarter-finals. Furthermore, the two have a pretty similar hard-hitting playstyle that could see few break points and Vukic’s support in the tiebreaks may come to his aid. For that reason, taking this match to see five sets would be a shrewd risk. Otherwise, opt for at least one tiebreak in this match and for Vukic to win at least one set in what could be a thriller.
