26-year-old Alejandro Tabilo will break inside the top 30 for the first time after claiming the biggest ranking win of his life over an out-of-sorts, frankly terrible, Novak Djokovic on Sunday. The 26-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough season on tour, winning his maiden ATP title in Auckland before finishing runner-up to Sebastian Baez at the Chile Open in February, and he brought strong form into Rome after winning the Provence Challenger two weeks ago. Nothing could have prepared the Chilean for something like this, however, and it will be fascinating to see how he reacts to beating a legend of the sport against tireless test Karen Khachanov, who is exactly the sort of player you do not want to meet unfocused.
World number 18 Khachanov beat Francisco Cerundolo for the second tournament running to extend his record over the Argentine to 5-0, backing-up a solid opener over Alexander Shevchenko. The 27-year-old is a serious threat on all surfaces and he will be desperate to take this opportunity with both hands as the Italian Open draw widens ever further. The Russian won their only previous encounter in straight sets two years ago but this second could come a lot closer. Back Khachanov to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
