THE PREDICTION
Next Gen ATP Finals champion Hamad Medjedovic looks the real deal on clay so far at the Italian Open, earning his place with a searing qualifying campaign before an excellent straight-sets victory over Alexei Popyrin on Thursday. The 20-year-old also reached the second round at the Madrid Open two weeks ago, before falling foul of an insatiable Jiri Lehecka, as he builds back confidence following his brilliant run to the up-and-comers’ crown in Jeddah last November.
World number 33 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat Jerry Shang in straight sets at this stage of Madrid last week, to avoid an early exit to a youngster, and he was competitive in a tight defeat to eventual champion Andrey Rublev in the third round. The 24-year-old is at his best in these more typical clay-court conditions in Rome but he hast struggled to make much of an impact on the clay swing so far, with second place at Monte-Carlo two years ago proof of what he can achieve when he finds some rhythm. Medjedovic is a serious talent with a penchant for big games so consider backing the Serb to earn at least a set on momentum here to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: HAMAD MEDJEDOVIC TO WIN A SET
