THE PREDICTION

This could be the match of the day between former world number 32 Ajla Tomljanovic, who was handed a wildcard as she makes her return from injury, and world number 104 Taylor Townsend. 27-year-old Townsend is coming in hot from a long-awaited strong run at the US Open where she beat 19th seed Beatriz Haddad-Maia in straight sets before a competitive defeat to 10th seed Karolina Muchova in the third round and she backed that up with runs to the semi-finals in Woman’s Doubles and quarter-finals in Mixed. Townsend set a career-high WTA world ranking of 61st in 2018 but she has always been capable of more in much the same way that Tomljanovic realised last season with back-to-back quarter-finals reached Wimbledon and the US Open. The 30-year-old won her first match this season late last month, after suffering injury on the eve of the Australian Open in January, but fitness remains a concern after she withdrew from her second round match there. Tomljanovic beat Townsend in three sets in Cincinnati last season but take the American to edge through outright in the better form this time around.
