THE LOWDOWN
AJLA TOMLJANOVIC
28-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic set a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th back in 2019 and the current number 45 looks set to break that this season. The Aussie reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last season for a best-ever Grand Slam run before defeat to eventual champion Ash Barty. Tomljanovic has finished runner-up in four WTA tour finals so far, most recently in 2019.
PAULA BADOSA
Paula Badosa’s incredible rise through the rankings last season to a career-high of eighth was nothing short of remarkable and the Spaniard capped it off with a first Masters title at Indian Wells. The 24-year-old reached the semi-finals of the WTA Finals on her debut with two wins each over Aryna Sabalenka and Maria Sakkari and she took that form straight into the new year with a win on Saturday at the Sydney Tennis Classic for her third career title.
THE PREDICTION
Paula Badosa got her Sydney Tennis Classic title-winning campaign underway with a straight-sets victory over Jelena Ostapenko and then Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round earlier this week and that looks a pretty decent benchmark for the outcome here. Tomljanovic enjoyed some of her best tennis last season and she will be well-backed by the Aussie crowd but Badosa’s charm is undeniable and her level only increasing since her Masters win at Indian Wells. The title win is unlikely to phase the Spaniard but the sensible option is still taking her to win outright with Tomljanovic capable of forcing a decider here.
