THE LOWDOWN

ADRIAN MANNARINO

33-year-old Adrian Mannarino has matched his best showing at a Grand Slam by reaching the second week at Melbourne for a first time after a stunning victory over the 15th seed Aslan Karatsev. The world number 69 had previously found his best major form at Wimbledon with three round of 16 exits over the years but he has been superb so far with a second-round shock win over 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz no longer looking like an anomaly. Mannarino won his only ATP title to date on grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2019.

RAFAEL NADAL

35-year-old Rafael Nadal dropped the first set of his Australian Open campaign in a tough test against Karen Khachanov on Friday but the 20-time Grand Slam champion was largely in control. Nadal won the Australian Open way back in 2009 but he has finished runner-up on four other occasions, with his lats two appearances ended at the quarter-final stage. Nadal is riding a six-match winning streak after taking the title at Melbourne 1 two weeks ago.

THE PREDICTION

It is no surprise to find that Rafael Nadal has beaten Adrian Mannarino in straight sets in both of their previous meetings but the Frenchman must not be underestimated after his stunning week so far. He may find some of his best weapons a little limited against Nadal with both players left-handed and that makes taking the Spaniard in straight sets a tempting option. However, Nadal is not quite up to his best level yet and a dropped set against Khachanov will encourage Mannarino who simply has nothing to lose as the severe underdog here. He almost beat Roger Federer at Wimbledon last summer before an injury spoiled his chances, so taking Nadal as the outright winner is the sensible move here.
